Big Lottery Funding Pain Association Scotland Awarded Funding for Remote and Rural Services in the Western Isles. We are delighted to announce that the Big Lottery Fund has awarded a grant to the Association for the delivery of intensive self-management courses and monthly self-management groups in the Western Isles, in particular a new service in Barra. The aim of this three year project is to reach out and provide more learning and support for Chronic Pain Sufferers in this area, who would otherwise be denied this service. The needs of the chronic pain sufferer are substantial and long term.  Many of their problems are not always helped by medical interventions.  Despite one fifth of the Scottish population living in a rural area, the dominant model of health care in Scotland continues to be distinctly urban based. Over two thirds of the adult population with chronic pain (68%) report that their medication is inadequate at times and over one in five (22%) have discontinued using their prescribed pain medication. Sufferers in these remote and rural communities have no statutory provision, and it has only been possible to provide these services with excellent collaborative work with a very active GP and Physiotherapy Service in the area.  Current evaluation compiled over the years has demonstrated positive changes to people’s coping ability and improved wellbeing.  The relevance of the inter-related topics indicates that we use the right balance of strategies and coping techniques.  This has been developed from over 27 years of experience, understanding   the needs of the Chronic Pain sufferer and incorporating feedback from service users. We look forward to launching this service in March 2017 and to continuing our excellent collaborative work with NHS Western Isles.

The Barra Group will now be delivered by Video Conference.  See attached Poster and Programme for details. Barra Poster18
